In the series ‘Postcards from the field’, researchers from the mareXtreme joint projects share insights from their ‘field work’.

Cover picture of the postcard with the logos of mareXtreme and ElbeXtreme and the author's name. The picture shows scientists using a measuring device to take samples on the deck of a ship.

Back of the postcard with the following data: ElbeXtreme February exit 2025 - 11 February 2025 - Helogland harbour, Heincke entrance and the following text: Greetings from the North Sea! In icy winds and rolling waves in the North Sea, eight scientists from GEOMAR and the AWI set off on an exciting mission on board the Heincke. The aim of this expedition as part of the ElbeXtreme project was to investigate the effects of extreme events on the ecosystem of the German Bight. Over three intensive days, we took samples for nutrients, metals, chlorophyll, DIC, DOC, POC and more at 13 stations. Using CTD instruments, Goflow and Niskin bottles, we collected water samples at three depths. While last year the conditions were affected by the high tide, this time we observed a normal state of the German North Sea in January. This provided us with important comparative data. Despite the rough weather, our spirits remained high! Now that we have arrived in snowy Bremerhaven, we can look back on a successful and rewarding expedition at sea. Until next time, best wishes from the Heincke participants!
